Home Remodeling: Convert Your Dining Room with Intentional Design

I’m from a family that values tradition above all else. Unfortunately, not all traditions make sense for you and the people you share your home with.

It is traditional to include a formal dining room in your home design plans, and we agree that a gorgeously designed formal dining room can make an open-concept home look opulent.

A formal dining room can potentially contribute to a home’s resale value as well, but are there better uses for this space that would align with your family’s priorities, goals, and values?

If you are considering remodeling your home to maximize the functionality of your living spaces, we have a few ideas.

CONVERT YOUR DINING ROOM TO A HOME OFFICE

The simplest and most cost-efficient renovation would be to convert your formal dining room into a spare bedroom or home office. Your home designer can help you plan the build in a way that will minimize interruptions in your daily life and since rooms like these typically don’t require additional plumbing you won’t have to worry about hiring a plumber to achieve this transformation.

Add French doors to complete the transformation and you won’t have need to cool or heat this room on days when you won’t be using it.

TRANSFORM YOUR FORMAL DINING ROOM INTO A BUTLER’S PANTRY

If you don’t often use your formal dining room you may feel as though it’s a waste of a space and you may find the space gathering dust or just a clunky inconvenience that still requires regular cleaning and maintenance, not to mention heating and cooling.

Consider converting your traditional dining room into a functional Butlers’ pantry. Your butler’s pantry provides a back-of-house space to complement your kitchen and existing food pantry. These clever kitchen additions elevate your food preparation workflow by providing room for a second fridge, dishwasher, and sink, as well as incredible counter space. Your home designer can design a Butlers’ pantry to accommodate your existing kitchen or you can remodel both for your dream chef’s kitchen.

CONVERT YOUR DINING ROOM INTO AN EXPANDED UTILITY ROOM

Depending on your home’s existing blueprint, it may make sense to add a large laundry room where your formal dining room is currently situated. Some homeowners opt to have their laundry room pass through and connect to the master closet. Others like to have the laundry room near the mud room.

Would the space that your dining room occupies be more useful as a large laundry room?

BONUS IDEA: LAUNDRY CLOSET + POWDER ROOM + EXTRA STORAGE SOLUTIONS

Use this space to add a laundry closet that is just large enough to include a side-by-side washer, or, if you are looking at a home with fewer occupants, a laundry closet with a stackable washer and dryer might be convenient here.

Depending on the size of your formal dining room, consider adding a laundry space and a powder room. Since you will already need to hire a plumber if you are remodeling to add a laundry room, allocating some space to a powder room could improve your quality of life and enhance the value of your home.

If you have leftover square footage, ask your home designer to suggest valuable linen storage or other storage solutions.
